[1] ----- BEER BIKE Coordinating -----

***Beer Bike Coordinating***

Hey Will Rice sophomores and juniors!

Interested in the awesomeness that is the Will Rice Beer Bike coordinating team? Returning coordinators Meesh and Rachel will be holding an informational session next THURSDAY, September 24th, during LUNCH for sophomores and juniors who are interested in getting involved with Beer Bike. Come learn what the responsibilities of a coordinator are, what we've done in the past, and what some of our goals are for this year.
If you have any questions, contact Meesh (mlk1@rice.edu) or Rachel (rem1@rice.edu).

WRWS!!

[2] ----- New Provost Needed -----
As you all may know, Provost Eugene Levy will be stepping down at the end of this
academic year. The President's Office is currently compiling a search committee to select his successor. The committee will have one undergraduate representative.

The provost is the chief academic officer of the university and second-in-command after the university president. This position has tremendous influence over the future of Rice University, so it is very important that we have an enthusiastic and dedicated undergraduate who will represent the student interest to their fullest ability.

If you are interested in applying for this prestigious position, please e-mail
sapres@rice.edu with a copy of your resume and a brief statement of interest. Feel free to contact me with any questions.

Patrick McAnaney
Student Association President

[3] ----- LAUNDRY THIEVERY -----
ATTENTION EVERYONE!!!

It has come to my attention that some items have turned up missing from the laundry room, in specific a blue cloth mesh laundry basket. If you took this by accident, just bring it back to the laundry room and leave it there. Most importantly, DON'T TAKE OTHER PEOPLE'S STUFF!!! The laundry room is all about love, and stealing is not cool. And just in case this doesn't make you feel a sudden sense of moral responsibility, we will be hunting down anyone removing anything from the laundry room. Consequencecs will be dire.

Love,
Shan McDonell
WRC Laundry Committee Head

P.S. If you see someone taking anything that isn't theirs, make sure you tell them to "GET REAL!!!" The embarrassment alone should stop them in their tracks.

[4] ----- Choices Program -----

[5] ----- New Recreation Center Opening -----
Come join us for the dedication and grand opening of the Barbara and David Gibbs Recreation and Wellness Center on Friday, September 25 from 2 to 4 p.m.

[6] ----- New Bicycle Safety Policy -----
Rice University has adopted a NEW and ENFORCEABLE Bicycle Safety Policy!

Please read the following for some highlights of the policy. The entire policy may be found at rice.edu/bikesatrice – click on “Bicycle Safety Rules”.

REGISTER YOUR BIKE

· Bicycle registration is now MANDATORY

· Helps RUPD identify lost, stolen or impounded bicycles

· Disseminates safety information

· Registration is FREE

Register at: rice.edu/bikesatrice or stop by the RUPD – 713-348-6000

BELL OR YELL

· Rice has adopted a “Bell or Yell” program for cyclists to announce their approach when passing pedestrians from behind.

· You will get a free bicycle bell when you register your bicycle.

OBEY THE RULES OF THE ROAD

* Cyclists riding in the street are required to comply with motor vehicle traffic regulations
* Cyclists should obey traffic signs and always ride with the traffic.
* At all stop signs, cyclists must stop and yield the right-of-way to other vehicles and pedestrians

RUPD will ticket cyclists for right-of-way violations at intersections

YIELD TO PEDESTRIANS

* Pedestrians have the right of way on sidewalks, in crosswalks, and around any stopped bus.
* Pedestrians are encouraged to be aware of their surroundings, but it is the cyclist’s responsibility to yield to a pedestrian.
* Cyclists may not pass any bus that has stopped to pick up or discharge passengers.

RIDING PROHIBITED IN COVERED WALKWAYS

* Covered walkways are OFF LIMITS to bicycle riding.
* Because covered walkways have blind corners and are located in front of building entrances, cyclists must walk their bicycles in these areas of the campus.

RUPD will issue citations for riding a bicycle in these prohibited areas.

RIDING BICYCLES ON SIDEWALKS

Every person riding a bicycle on a sidewalk MUST:

1. Ride in a careful and prudent manner
2. Slow to a near walking pace within 10 feet of any pedestrian or building entrance
3. Yield the right of way to pedestrians
4. Give an audible signal before overtaking and passing any pedestrian

A cyclist who strikes someone may be liable for personal injuries and property damage.

LOCK YOUR BICYCLES IN RACKS

* Cyclists are expected to secure their bicycles in the bicycle racks.
* Rice has bicycle racks that are conveniently located throughout the campus.

Bicycles secured to fences, sign posts, stair railings or locations other than bicycle racks may be ticketed or impounded. Unsecured bicycles may be impounded for safekeeping.

Abandoned bicycles will be removed

* Bicycles left unattended for an extended period of time are presumed to be abandoned and as such will be removed by the RUPD.
* Suspected bicycles will be tagged with a removal end date.
* Abandoned bicycles will be held at the RUPD for 60 days before they may be disposed.
* To retrieve an impounded bicycle, the owner must provide proof of ownership.

Register your bike TODAY at rice.edu/bikesatrice or stop by the RUPD – 713-348-6000

Thank you from the Bicycle Safety Committee:
