Will Rice and McMurtry,

Myself and others have noticed some smoking occurring in interior hallways and stairwells in our building. This is really poor form-- if you want to smoke, take it outside.

[10] ----- Helene Cooper is coming to Rice -----
Helene Cooper, author of this year’s common reading, The House at Sugar Beach, will visit Rice on September 3 to deliver a keynote address, and you are all warmly invited to attend this exciting event.

Born in Monrovia, Liberia, Ms. Cooper fled to the U.S. as a teenager following the 1980 coup that initiated two decades of conflict in Liberia. Overcoming the challenges of being a refugee and immigrant, Cooper went on to college at the University of North Carolina and a career as a prominent journalist, working for The Wall Street Journal and New York Times, for which she currently serves as White House correspondent.

Ms. Cooper’s address, at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 3, in Tudor Fieldhouse, is open to the entire Rice community. First-year students who read her book as part of Orientation are especially encouraged to attend. Doors open at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are not required. A book-signing will follow immediately after.

To learn more about Ms. Cooper and her book, please visit these links: http://students.rice.edu/students/Common_Reading_SugarBeach.asp.

[11] ----- Freshmen... Be an NSR -----
Hey, Will Rice/McMurtry freshmen!

This is just a reminder that you can (and should) apply to be this year's New Student Representatives for your college in the Student Association--it's a great way to get involved, meet new people, and make a difference across campus. Attached is the application, which must be submitted to hpt1@rice.edu by 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, September 2. Meanwhile, if you're interested in finding out more about this position, there will be an NSR info session at 9 p.m. tomorrow night (August 31) at the Farnsworth Pavilion, complete with Thai food; meet up in the commons at 8:45 so that we can head there together! Also, feel free to email me with any questions.

[12] ----- Walk John Elias' Dog?!? -----
Hope the new school year is starting off great! I have a dog that would really like a walk during the day if he could get one, since I'm gone a lot of the day. If someone from Will Rice or McMurtry might want to hang out with my dog a little every day (or even just some days), I would be eternally grateful and he probably would too. He's a small dog who doesn't shed (my brother who is really allergic to dogs isn't allergic to him). I live a couple miles from Rice. I'll pay a little bit too. If it seems like it would be fun and not too inconvenient, please email me at johne033@gmail.com

John Elias, Will Rice 09

[13] ----- Sign Language???? -----
Anyone who knows ASL, a little or a lot, is invited to the ASL lunch table
at Brown College being held on Fridays. Even if you don't know much about
ASL but are intrigued with this language, you are most welcome. Just look
for the group talking with their hands (and the voices of those who don't
know ASL well). Remember you can eat at any college so don't hesitate to
come to the ASL lunch on Friday at Brown. Anyone with questions can write
to me or Brown College student Jon Stanley, jon.stanley@rice.edu.
