When using your personal machine to check your email, you
have a choice between simply using SSH to connect to one of
the Owlnet servers, or using a email client on your local
machine.
If you wish to SSH in to Owlnet, you can download SSH
for your computer at [software.is.rice.edu].
Once it is installed, you should SSH to
jungle.owlnet.rice.edu, and then run
pine as described in the 'Using Owlnet Machines'
section above.
You can also set up any common email program to check
your Rice email, such as Eudora, Outlook Express, or
Netscape from your computer on-campus. The main information
you will need is below, but each program is set up a little
differently. Feel free to contact the College Computing
Associates (CCA's) at problem[at]rice[dot]edu if
you have any problems.
You can choose between using POP3 or IMAP
for checking your email. POP3 stores your messages
on your own computer, which is useful once you get a ton of email
(which you will) so that your Owlnet account doesn't run out of
space. It can be annoying if you check your mail from different
computers, though. IMAP stores your messages on Rice's
mail server, which allows you to access them from several different
computers or locations. You can also set up folders for organizing
your mail or "local folders" for downloading them off the server.
In your email program, open the Preferences or Account Settings
window, and set whether you want to use POP3 or
IMAP for your incoming mail. Use the appropriate
server below, and use the SMTP server for outgoing
mail.
POP3 Server: pop.owlnet.rice.edu
IMAP Server: imap.owlnet.rice.edu
SMTP Server: smtp.owlnet.rice.edu
If it is available in your email program, you should select
SSL encryption for your incoming mail server (POP3 or
IMAP). This is much more secure and is strongly
recommended. However, note that SSL on the outgoing mail
server (SMTP) should not be selected, since no passwords
are sent in the process and Rice does not support it.
